Martine plunged into the coffee business some 30 years ago, through marrying an artisan coffee roaster who learned the trade from his father. Together, and since 2 years with the assistance of their daughter, Martine and Johan run a middle sized coffee roastery in Belgium, specialised in organic and in low caffeine, digestible gourmet coffee. Their brand, Koffie Kàn, is sold in more than 1.000 specialised food retail shops all over Belgium. Sales in Ireland and the UK have just started. Next to building up a coffee business Martine also worked as a professional freelance copywriter and wrote in her mother language Dutch loads of articles on coffee. Two books too: one dedicated to the conscious coffee lover (‘Koffie kàn te boek’), another one for the Royal Association of Belgian Coffee Roasters (‘Koffie een vriend’, translated into French as ‘Café mon ami’. Ordering this official coffee book is possible via www.koffiebureaucafe.be.)

Dedicated to Education on Coffee Martine has always concentrated on good communication with the Koffie Kàn customers all over Belgium. This continuous communication not only reinforces the strong market position of Koffie Kàn, but has also been the perfect feedback for the several educational and promotional activities the Association of Belgian Coffee Roasters commissioned Martine to organise. She’s the driving force behind a Promotion Work Group within the Belgian Association. From 1986 to 1999 she directed a $2.5 million national generic coffee campaign, financed by the Belgian Association and the late ICO Promotion Fund. She wrote and supervised the production of several manuals on coffee, intended for primary and catering school, as well as the brand new website the Belgian Association just launched (www.koffiekan.be).
