Dede Ryan (top left and bottom center) reads one of her feature stories at Barnes & Noble in Boise, Idaho. Alan Minskoff (top right), editor of The Boise Journal, introduces Ryan, who did several readings during 2003 and 2004.

Dede Ryan was born in 1952 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and lived there until moving to Washington, D.C., with her family eight years later.

In 1974, armed with a degree in Journalism and a love of writing, Ryan began professional life as a reporter on Capitol Hill. She held reporting and editorial positions at U.S. News & World Report and Business Publishers, Inc., for more than a decade. She was editor of two newsletters, American Marketplace and Public Transit Report; wrote a series of related monographs; and contributed feature stories to Mass Transit Magazine. In 1990, Ryan moved to Boise, Idaho, and launched the trade newsletter: Extrapolate.

At the same time, she continued her fiction and essay writing, and was a regular contributor to Boise Magazine. She also wrote weekly restaurant reviews for the Boise Weekly. Currently, Ryan writes feature articles for the quarterly publication, The Boise Journal.
Martini with a Twist, a philosophical essay, was published October 2001. It appears in a collection of short stories edited by Paul Auster in association with National Public Radio's All Things Considered. The 383-page volume (ISBN 0-8050-6714-0) was published August 2001 by Henry Holt and Company, New York.
